6 Questions To Ask A Freelance Designer During A Consultation
Asking these questions during a freelancing consultation will ensure that you are working with the right designer for your brand. It is also a chance for the designer to get to know you and figure out themselves if they are the right person for the job.
1. What other brands have you worked with?
This is a good way to gauge whether they are going to be able to do what you need. If you are a mens activewear brand, and the designer has only worked with baby-wear brands, when they may not be the best person to go for.
2. Do you have any other projects on at the moment?
This isn’t a question that the answer means you should or shouldn’t go for that designer, it is just a good way of finding out how much time the project will take. Personally, we try to not book over two projects at once, as we want to ensure we give the best attention to each brand, but of course, this could be different for any designer.
3. What are your lead-times?
This is so you know how long it will take to get your designs, to allow you to plan your collection more.
4. How many changes do I get and what happens if I still need more?
This will allow you to know just how detailed you need to be in the brief and the rounds of refinement, to avoid those extra charges.
5. What are your payment terms?
This needs to be clear before anything is started, if the terms aren’t as you would prefer, you might be able to try to amend these, but this might not be possible.
6. What are the cancellation terms?
Again, this needs to be clear before any design commences, you don’t want to gain any nasty charges if you cancel, and this way you are able to ensure it is clear about where both you, and the designer, stand.
