Do You Need To Go To University To Be A Fashion Designer?
I’m sure you will get different answers to this question, but the truth is, you don’t have to go to university and study fashion design to actually be a Fashion Designer if you don’t want to. There are pros and cons to the university experience, I won’t go into much detail but the cost is SO HIGH, but the student experience is great.
Each university will have different fashion courses, the course at the university I attended was amazing, but it only taught me about couture design, I learnt nothing about the programmes I use today or about the high-street retail industry (which is where most people in fashion will get a job). I learnt the basis of my skills and expertise that I possess now during an internship at Matalan. For this reason, I would recommend getting an internship at a fashion company to learn all about the design process, the programmes they use, sampling etc.
There are also short courses you can do online and in-person, I know St Martins in London have a range of short courses in fashion you can attend. I’ve never done this so I can’t tell you what happens, but it is an option for you, but the majority of knowledge is going to be from internships.
If you do want to go to university that is great, fashion design is a really amazing course, and I don’t regret my decision to go, but I would have liked to know there were other options when I was studying.
What do you think? Do you think you need to go to university to be a fashion designer?
